The Parkinson's Appeal for Deep Brain Stimulation

THE FUNCTIONAL NEUROSURGERY UNIT (FNU)

The Functional Neurosurgery Unit at the Institute of Neurology/National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery is a highly specialised multi-disciplined team which includes three of the worlds leading experts dedicated to the use and research of Deep Brain Stimulation for the neurosurgical treatment of movement disorders.

Led by functional neurosurgeon Professor Marwan Hariz with over 20 years experience in this field. Including training in Sweden with Professor Lauri Laitinen pioneer of modern movement disorder neurosurgery, before becoming an internationally recognised expert.

Dr Patricia Limousin a neurologist who trained in Grenoble in the early days of Deep Brain Stimulation is one of the worlds most experienced specialists in the management of patients with deep brain stimulation. Dr Limousin holds a Ph.D. in this field.

Professor Marjan Jahanshahi is the neuropsychologist, widely published and recognised internationally for her work on the cognitive, motor and psychosocial aspects of Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders.

Mr Ludvic Zrinzo Consultant Neurosurgeon and Research Fellow was appointed to the Unit on May 1st, 2007. Mr Zrinzo first worked with the Unit as Registrar in 2003 and has since spent 2 years as Clinical Fellow to the Unit.

Dr Thomas Foltynie is a neurologist and has published over 25 papers related to PD, as well as 1 book and a book chapter on PD. Dr Foltynie was appointed to the Unit in May 2008.

Dr Irene Martinez Torres is a neurologist, working as a Clinical Fellow with the unit.

Joseph Candelario is the movement disorder surgery nurse.

Ms. Elina Tripoliti is a speech therapist doing a Ph.D. on the effect of surgery on speech.

Linda Taib is the PA to Professor Hariz and Secretary of the Unit of Functional Neurosurgery.
